For pure water cutting of soft materials like foam or rubber, a pump of 30-50 HP is generally sufficient, with the nozzle size optimized for water volume rather than abrasive mixing.

For thick materials over 0.5 inch up to 2 inches, cutting requires a larger volume of water and abrasive to erode the full depth. A 0.014" or 0.015" orifice combined with a 0.040" nozzle is recommended for thick metals. This combination allows for a higher abrasive flow rate up to 1.5 pounds per minute, which is necessary to maintain a reasonable cutting speed on thick sections. For materials exceeding 0.75 inch, the larger 0.040" nozzle becomes increasingly beneficial.

For materials over 2 inches thick, some operators increase to a 0.020" orifice with a 0.060" nozzle, though this requires a pump capable of delivering over 2 gallons per minute at full pressure. The orifice and nozzle must also be replaced more frequently with larger sizes, as abrasive wear accelerates with increased flow.

Selecting the correct orifice and nozzle combination ensures optimal cutting speed, edge quality, and component life. Undersized nozzles restrict abrasive flow and slow cutting. Oversized nozzles waste abrasive and water without improving performance.
