What types of cutting heads are available and what is the difference between single, dual, and multi-head systems?

Waterjet cutting heads are classified by the number of independent cutting nozzles installed on the machine. The three main configurations are single-head, dual-head, and multi-head systems. Each has distinct advantages depending on production volume, part size, and budget.

Single-Head System

A single-head system has one cutting head that follows one programmed path at a time. It is the most common and cost-effective configuration. All pump pressure and abrasive flow are dedicated to one nozzle, delivering maximum cutting power and depth capability. This makes it ideal for thick materials, large parts, and high-precision work where a single, uninterrupted cut is required. The limitation is throughput: only one part or contour is cut per pass.

Dual-Head System

A dual-head system mounts two independent cutting heads on the same gantry. Each head has its own Z-axis, abrasive feed, and cutting program, allowing two different parts to be cut simultaneously on the same table. This effectively doubles productivity for small to medium-sized parts without increasing floor space or pump size. The two heads can also be programmed to cut the same large part from opposite sides. However, because the pump output is shared, each head receives approximately half the available hydraulic power, so maximum cutting thickness per head is reduced compared to a single-head setup.

Multi-Head System

Multi-head systems use three or more cutting heads, typically for high-volume production of small, thin parts. They offer the highest throughput per square meter of table space. The trade-off is complexity: each head requires its own abrasive delivery, alignment, and wear-part management. Pump capacity must be sized accordingly, and the pressure drop across multiple heads can affect cut quality consistency.

Selection Considerations

Choose a single-head system for thick plate, large-format cutting, and applications where cut quality and depth are priorities. Choose a dual-head system when you need higher throughput on small to medium parts without adding a second machine. Choose a multi-head system only when part sizes are small, materials are thin, and production volume justifies the added complexity.
