Product ID: 05034855 – Backup Ring (High-Pressure Seal Support)

Description:
This component is a backup ring designed for high-pressure waterjet intensifier pumps and hydraulic cylinder assemblies. It is a rigid, ring-shaped sealing support component installed adjacent to an O-ring or other elastomeric seal within a seal groove. The backup ring prevents seal extrusion into clearance gaps under ultra-high pressure conditions, thereby protecting the primary seal from damage and ensuring leak-free operation.

Applications:

  • Used in waterjet cutting intensifier pumps and hydraulic cylinders alongside O-rings or rod seals in high-pressure sealing applications.

  • Installed in seal grooves on plungers, pistons, sealing heads, cylinder glands, or valve assemblies to support dynamic or static seals.

  • Suitable for ultra-high pressure waterjet systems operating at 55,000–60,000 PSI (approximately 3,800–4,137 bar) and compatible with SL-IV, SL-V, Classic series, and OEM intensifier assemblies.

Features:

  • Manufactured from rigid, wear-resistant materials such as PTFE, PEEK, nylon, or acetal to withstand high pressure without deforming.

  • Precision-machined or molded to exact dimensions for proper fit within seal grooves and against mating surfaces.

  • Typically features a split or scalloped design for easy installation over shafts or into bores without damaging the ring or adjacent seals.

  • Functions by filling the extrusion gap between the O-ring and the gland wall, preventing the softer seal material from flowing into the gap under pressure.

  • Engineered to withstand ultra-high pressure, typically 55,000–60,000 PSI or higher.

  • Chemically compatible with water, hydraulic fluids, and mild abrasive environments.

Maintenance:

  • Always Replace with Seals: During seal replacement, always remove the existing backup ring and replace it with a new one. Do not reuse a backup ring that shows signs of permanent compression set, splitting, deformation, or edge damage.

  • Inspection: Inspect the backup ring for signs of cracking, wear, extrusion damage, or loss of dimensional integrity before installation.

  • Orientation: When installing new seals, place the backup ring on the low-pressure side of the O-ring or primary seal unless specified otherwise in the equipment service manual.

  • Dynamic Applications: For dynamic (reciprocating) applications, ensure the backup ring orientation matches the direction of pressure to provide proper support and prevent extrusion.

  • Fit Verification: Ensure the backup ring inner diameter fits freely over the shaft or that the outer diameter fits correctly into the bore without binding.

  • Installation Method: Install split or scalloped backup rings by hand, carefully expanding or compressing as designed; avoid over-stretching or permanent deformation.

  • Full Depressurization: Always fully depressurize both the hydraulic system and the high-pressure water system before disassembling any component containing backup rings.

  • Do Not Use Alone: Never install a backup ring without its corresponding O-ring or primary seal, as the backup ring alone does not provide sealing function.

  • Storage: Store spare backup rings in a clean, dry environment away from direct sunlight, ozone, or harsh chemicals to prevent material degradation.
