Pure Water Cutting Head Assembly – Pneumatically Controlled On/Off Valve for Water-Only Cutting
Description:
This component is a pure water cutting head assembly, also known as a water-only cutting head or Aqualine style nozzle assembly, designed for high-pressure waterjet cutting systems. It is a pneumatically actuated on/off valve that controls the start and stop of the pure waterjet for cutting applications where abrasive is not required. The assembly is rated for ultra-high pressure operation and is designed for applications in automotive, aerospace, plastic, foam, food, and paper industries where high cutting speeds and material integrity are critical.
Applications:
Used in waterjet cutting machines for pure water (water-only) cutting applications including paper, cardboard, foam, plastic, rubber, gaskets, food products, and thin composites.
Installed at the end of the high-pressure water line to deliver a coherent, high-velocity waterjet for cutting soft or thin materials without abrasive contamination.
Suitable for 1D, 2D, multi-axis, and robotic cutting systems requiring rapid on/off cycling.
Applicable in high-production environments such as automotive parts cutting, aerospace composite trimming, packaging material slitting, and food processing.
Assembly Components (Typical):
The complete pure water cutting head assembly includes the following components:
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Pneumatic Actuator Assembly, NC (Normally Closed) | Top-mounted cylinder for valve actuation |
| Piston | Reciprocating component within actuator |
| Cylinder Cap | Encloses pneumatic cylinder |
| Wiper Seal | Prevents contamination entry |
| Retaining Ring | Secures internal components |
| Pneumatic Cylinder | Main actuator housing |
| Compression Springs (6) | Return mechanism for valve closure |
| O-Rings | Various sizes for sealing |
| SST Backup Ring | Anti-extrusion support for high-pressure seal |
| Cover | Protective cover |
| HP Gland | High-pressure connection fitting |
| Brass Backup Ring | Prevents seal extrusion |
| Seal Assembly | Complete high-pressure sealing unit |
| Valve Stem | Needle or poppet for on/off control |
| Valve Seat | Sealing surface for valve closure |
Features:
Pneumatic Actuation: Air-operated on/off control with rapid response time; the valve opens in less than 50 ms depending on operating pressure.
Normally Closed (NC) Configuration: Default state is closed; air pressure is required to open the valve, ensuring safety during power loss.
Ultra-High Pressure Rating: Designed for 60,000 PSI (approximately 4,137 bar) and PRO models available for 90,000 PSI (approximately 6,200 bar).
Fast Cycle Capability: Engineered for high-cycle applications with multiple on/off operations per minute without reliability degradation.
Leak Detection Features: Leak holes in the design protect internal components and indicate which connection requires tightening or which seal needs replacement; unique design allows seal replacement in under 5 minutes.
Compact Design: Lightweight construction (approximately 1.8 kg / 3.9 lbs) ensures high flexibility for multi-head and 3D applications; compact size allows multiple cutting heads on a single system.
Orifice Compatibility: Can be equipped with both sapphire and diamond orifices to match individual process requirements.
Backup Configuration Capability: Compact design allows installation of second cutting head set as backup or redundant solution; more than 12 cutting heads can operate on a single cutting system.
Pure Water Only: Designed specifically for water-only cutting without abrasive delivery system.
Maintenance:
Seal Replacement: The unique design allows seal replacement in under 5 minutes; leak holes clearly indicate which seal needs attention.
O-Ring Inspection: Regularly inspect all O-rings (item 6, 8 in parts list) for wear, cuts, or extrusion damage; replace with every valve service.
Spring Check: Inspect compression springs for fatigue, breakage, or loss of tension; replace damaged springs to ensure proper valve return.
Valve Seat and Stem Inspection: During overhaul, inspect the valve seat and valve stem sealing surfaces for pitting, erosion, or wear caused by high-velocity water flow; replace damaged components.
Backup Ring Replacement: Replace SST and brass backup rings during each rebuild to prevent seal extrusion under ultra-high pressure.
Pneumatic Cylinder Maintenance: Inspect the pneumatic cylinder and piston for scoring or wear; check wiper seal for contamination ingress.
HP Gland Inspection: Check HP gland threads and sealing surfaces for wear, galling, or damage; replace if any deformation is detected.
Orifice Maintenance: For long-life orifices such as diamond, periodic cleaning using mild cleaning solution in an ultrasonic cleaner will maintain a clean, coherent waterjet stream; rotate to a second orifice while the first is being cleaned.
Leak Monitoring: Use leak detection holes to monitor for high-pressure water leakage; any visible leakage indicates the need for connection tightening or seal replacement.
Full Depressurization: Always fully depressurize the waterjet system and disconnect air supply before performing any maintenance on the cutting head assembly.
Torque Compliance: Tighten all threaded connections (HP gland, cover, actuator mounting) to torque values specified in the equipment service manual.
Component Replacement: During complete overhaul, replace all seals, O-rings, backup rings, and the valve seat/stem as a set; do not reuse individual components from old assembly.
